COCKATIELS

Relatives to Parrots and Cockatoo, the Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus) is native from Australia and was described for the first time in 1792. They had arrived at the European continent, brought by expeditions, in the year 1840. At the present, together with its "cousins", the Budgies (Melopsittacus undulatus), these birds are the most created in the world. Easy to create and long life (in average 18 years, since that well taken care of), the Cockatiel is recommended for who desires to have a beautiful bird without work.

In their natural habitat, the Cockatiel lives in colonies and likes to build its nest in dead trees. They are found near to rivers and waterfalls and theirs migrations are controlled by the cycle of the waters

Through selected crossings, starting of the yellow-silver original coloration, at present we find several standards of coloring, between them cinnamon, pied and pearl mutations. Training Cockatiel requires much patience and not every bird learns, however the results are rewarded with beautiful whistles and repetition of some music.

Reproduction:
The males possess more intense face coloration beside female. Once formed a couple, they develops a relationship with “kisses and affection”, remaining all the time together. The female deposit in average 5 eggs for period. The incubation process is shared between the couple. The chicks born after 18- 23 days and are ready to leave the nest after 28 days in median.

Maintenance:
They need space to fly and jump to one perch to another, being interesting a longer birdcage beside than high one. A birdcage of 1 m x 30 cm x 40 cm is the minimum for a Cockatiel. The birdcage should contain a nest type box with about 35 cm of height and 20 cm in the sides. A food and water bowl and one bowl with water for baths are necessary. Put the birdcage in a ventilated place that receives sun in the morning is important, but be carefully with airflow. The daily cleanness is important to welfare of these beautiful birds.
