CANARIES

Since
5 centuries ago, these beautiful, colorful and singing birds,
capable to form musical duets and quartets, have delighted
thousands of people in the world.
They are native from the Canaries Islands, located in the
coast west of Africa that had curiously received this name
by the Romans, not for the Canaries but, for the big dogs
(canis in Latin) that there inhabited. It’s
believed that the first records about Canaries date of the
year 1402. Much used by the sailors as a pet animal, the
Canaries had quickly conquered the Europe and the world.
Before the Industrial Revolution the maintenance of Canaries
for the craftsmen in the workshops and store was common,
as entertainment form. This practical, to keep the Canaries
in the workstation, was also adopted by the coal miners,
who used them as alarm, therefore case these died inside
of the mine was sign of gas leak.
From the epoch of the discoverer of the wild greenish colored
Canary (Serinus canarius) until today, much was
made using selective creations. Currently four groups of
Canaries races exist: Wild Canaries, Color Canaries, Singer
Canaries and Size and shape Canaries. Amongst the wild Canaries,
we find in Brazil the Land-Canary (Canário-da-terra)
thus call in opposition to the Kingdom-Canary (Canário-do-reino)
brought by Portuguese court when they had been installed
here.
In relation to the Color Canaries, more than 300 colors
catalogued exist today, being grouped in melanin, lipochrome,
agates and Isabel colours.
At present the Singer Canaries are distinguished in some
races like the Harzer, the Malinolis, descendant of Belgian
Canaries of the region of Flandres (city of Malines) and
the Spanish, created in Spain since 1700.
Size or Position Canaries receive this designation due to
the body form and the position that they acquire in the
perch. Size Canaries are divides in Norwich, Yorkshire,
Lancashire, Lizard and others.
Reproduction:
The Canaries reproductive cycle, from the eggs to the chick
leaving the nest, is around 30 days. In this period, the minimum
of disturbances possible is important, to not interfere with
the biological processes involved. The sex difference of the
individuals does for observation of the anal region. The difference
between males and females also can be detected by the song
difference. Despite some females to sing, its song does not
have the same intensity or volume of the male’s song.
The female places 5 eggs in average (one per day, in the early
morning). The male and the female alternate the hatching and
the incubation period is of about 15 days.
Maintenance:
For Canaries maintenance in house, the option of a birdcage
at least is 60 cm of size, 30 cm of width and 40 cm of height,
with food bowl, drinking water, a shallow bathtub (the 2,5
3 cm in average) and some perches. The cleanness is illness
prevention basis. Therefore, it is interesting that the birdcage
has a removable tray that facilitates the process. You can
opt to lining it with some absorbent paper (like newspaper)
that should be change daily. Changes the water daily and cleans
the food bowl. Do the disinfection of the water and food bowl,
bathtub and the birdcage at least two times a week. Remove
the bathtub to avoid baths to the afternoon. Currents of wind,
moisture and crowding places should be avoided and are cares
that also improve the welfare of these singing birds.
Feed:
alcon Club Canário (alcon Club Canary), alcon Club Farinhada com Ovo para Canários
(alcon Club Egg Food for Canaries), alcon Club Papa para Filhotes - Pássaros.
