BRAZILIAN CARDINAL OR RED-CRESTED CARDINAL (Paroaria coronata)

A truly beautiful bird whose principal characteristic is the bright red raised crest above its head, which also reaches the chest, in both sexes. The upper and dorsal portions are grayish, the eyes are dark brown, the feet black and the ventral region is whitish. It has a high, metallic call.

Habitat: Lives in open areas, with tall vegetation. It usually prefers to perch in high places. In general it accepts temperature changes very well as well as the rigors of winter.

Captivity: They are aggressive animals. It is wise to keep them in couples, in wide and tall aviaries, with many bushes where they can nest. It is important that they always have fresh water, both to drink as well as to bathe.

Reproduction: Before coupling the male courts the female by dancing in front of her, with the tail feathers open and something in the beak. In nature, they prefer to build their nests in dense vegetation, located
02 - 04 m from the ground. The female lays 03 to 04 eggs, which the male and female alternate in incubating for 15 days. The parents also feed the young, for another 02 or 03 weeks after leaving the nest, between 14 and 17 days after birth. Properly maintained, they can live for 20 years.

Feed:
Alcon Club Trinca-Ferro, Alcon Club Farinhada - Pássaros Frugívoros e Insetívoros, Alcon Club Papa para Filhotes - Pássaros.
