LESSER SEED - FINCH

The Lesser Seed-Finch (Oryzoborus angolensis) is a one of the singing birds more valuable in Brazil, being able to a good bird to be changed for a brand new car. Its distributed in all Brazilian territory, since Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Sul, passing trough the states in the Center-West region. Its sing is similar to the sound of a violin, presents different characteristics features in each region of Brazil.

Its name, in the native language “Curió”, signifies “friend of the man”. It measures approximately 13 cm. Possess a black, short and strong beak. It’s an agitated bird that lives jump of to one perch to another. At present, the Lesser Seed, as well as many others Brazilian birds, finding threatened of extinction in result of the greedy, predatory hunting and to destruction of its natural environments. Efforts has been made between bird keepers for that birds not disappear, as well as exist legislation forbid the capture and transport of these animals from its natural environment, being characterized as unbailable crime. Only exemplary deriving of authorized aviary should be acquired.

Reproduction:
The males possess a black color with brown-reddish belly and a white spot in each wing. Females are totally brownish. The Lesser Seed is ready to reproduction after one age year. The breeding time is initiated in the end of the winter and lasts until the ending of the summer. The egg average is 2 for cycle and the egg opening occurs after about 13 days the position. Past 30 days of the birth, the chicks are ready for leave of the nest. The more recommended nests are made of bushing and are similar to the ones of Canaries and Great-Billed Seed-Finch. Material for nest confection as strings, grass and the proper bushing, must be left to the disposal of the female during the reproduction period.

Maintenance:
The birdcage should have at least 45 cm of length, 30 cm of height and 30 cm of width. They must contained a food and water recipient easy to removal for cleaning. The Lesser Seed like to take bath then, a bathtub in the morning for that is very good. The regular cleanness is another important factor for the health of these birds. The sun also is very important, mainly in the early morning and also in the end of the afternoon. Keep the birdcage in a wind currents sheltered place.
