PARROTS

Talkative and intelligent, the Parrots belong to the Psittacidae Family, together with Macaws, Agapornis, Cockatoos, African Grey, Cockatiels, Roselas, Ring-Necks, Red- Rumped, among others 344 species spread for the world. Brazil is the country that has more Psitacids in the world, with 72 catalogued species, being called in the old navigation’s letters “Terra Papagalis" (Parrots Land).

Between many others Parrots in the world, we have the Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazon aestiva), the Red-chest Parrot (Amazon vinacea) and the Parrot-of-face-purple (Amazon brasiliensis). They can be taught to ask for things, to sing music and to say entire phrases. It is considered that the Parrots have the intelligence of a 4 years old child, therefore need attention, toys and distractions, to prevent neurological problems, like stress, plucking feathers, the extreme aggressiveness or shouts.

In the genus Amazon we can find 28 species. The Amazon aestiva aestiva meets distributed from Piauí to Rio Grande do Sul (in Brazil) being also found in the Mato Grosso. Already the Amazon aestiva xantopteryx is found in Paraguay, Bolivia, Mato Grosso and also in Argentina. The main difference between them is that the A. aestiva xantopteryx presents more yellow areas in the wing and minor amount of red. In general way these Parrots possess the predominance of the green in the body, varying the coloration of the head, what it also serves as a "fingerprint" to these birds. The weight varies around 0, 500 kg and its size is of 37 cm in average. They can live more than 50 years and during this period they will go to need a mate or a company.

For being noise and talkative birds, it is necessary to study the environment where they will be placed, in order to prevent annoyances with the neighbors.

Reproduction:
The difference between males and females is not possible with external visualization, being recommended a genetic examination for the determination of the sex. They reach sexual maturity after 4 years old and the mating period occurs between October and February. Female lays 3 to 4 eggs in average and the hatching lasts 28 days. The female will pass most of the time in the nest and the male will feed it. After the birth, the chicks will remain in the nest more 9 weeks approximately.

Maintenance:
In a wrong way, many Parrots are kept in small birdcage or even chained what it’s nothing good for its health. They need space to move, to strain the wings and to fly, even if small distance. The birdcage must have space for a container with water to the appreciated baths. Toys of the most varied types are good to entertain themselves, water and balanced food they shouldn’t lack. The aviary for a couple needs, at the very least, 2 m of width, 1 meter of height and 1 meter of size. It must be installed in a calm place, where they can take sun in the morning and not to receive strong air currents. Moisture, noise and hot places should be avoided. The wooden box nest with format in “L” is used and must be installed in a sheltered place of rain.
