Salt Water Fishes

SPANISH HOGFISH - Bodianus rufus

Also known as Bodianus, this fish has the habit of "lying" on the bottom of the aquarium between rocks and algae or even burying itself in the sand. This fish is resistant and peaceful.
Another characteristic is that like other fish in the Labridae family, the Bodianus helps clean other fish such as groupers and surgeonfishes, removing worms and parasites from their scales.
It has a relatively short, though hydrodynamic, body. The dorsal and anal fins have long tips. The mouth has thick lips found at the far end of the snout.
The upper part of the body to the inferior ocular edge and the dorsal flipper are dark red with violet reflections. The rest of the body is yellow. It reaches 35 to 50 cm. in length.

  • Origin: Tropical Atlantic Ocean, Bermudas, Florida and Brazil.

  • Environment: Temperature between 20 and 28 ºC, +8 water pH, density between 1020 and 1023, intense illumination, sandy substratum, with rocks, pebbles and shelters.

  • Food: In the wild it feeds on small animals, coral polyps and even sea urchins. In the aquarium use Alcon Gold Marin Sticks, Alcon Gold Marin Flakes, Alcon Gold Spirulina Flakes, Alcon Blood Worms F. D. and also Alcon Shrimp.

  • Behavior: Can be aggressive with those of the same species.
