MEDITERRANEAN MORAY
- Muraena helena
Considered
dangerous and aggressive, Morays usually only attack when
threatened or provoked. Normally they remain hidden among
rocks and coral waiting for prey. Some members of the Muraenidae
family can have poisonous glands in their mouths, giving a
more efficient bite and making it more dangerous.
The body is rugged, without scales can be quite wide, large
mouth, pointed snout with posterior nostrils, similar to small
tubes, near the eyes. Its tone is between brown and jet black,
with yellow spots along the entire body. It reaches between
1 and 1.5 meters.
Origin: The
species is found in all the Mediterranean and the subtropical
coasts of the Atlantic.
Environment: It
lives in the cavities and crevices of reefs. Temperature
between 18 and 21 ºC, +8 pH, density around 1025, little
light, deep with many hiding places.
Food: Carnivorous, devouring fish
and mollusks without shells, octopus for example. You can
try feeding Alcon
Gold Oscar Sticks.
Behavior: Normally nocturnal,
can become accustomed to day feeding. It is recommended
that they be kept in isolation.
